There is a new opera directed by Kenny Leon, music directed by Richard Danielpour and libretto by writer Toni Morrison. Denyce Graves, mezzo-soprano, will open in the title role and Traci Luck,mezzo-soprano, will end the run.
The story follows the controversial story of an escaped slave woman in Kentucky, who fled the Maywood Plantation into Ohio. Upon threat of capture chooses to kill her two children instead of see them grow up in slavery.
Talk about you operatic tragedy. This is basically the premise of Morrison's book Beloved. Oprah Winfrey produced the movie Beloved starring herself and Danny Glover.
Loved the book hated the movie. Would love to go to an opera, don't know how I feel about seeing this story unfold onstage.
In case you are interested, it opens in the Chicago Auditorium Theater Nov. 1-9. Although, the Oct. 31 dress rehearsal is open student groups and students k- college. (Ebony, Nov. 2008)
