I attended a predominantly African American elementary school in the heart of the ‘hood. In the morning we would say the Pledge of Allegiance and at assemblies we would sing the National Anthem and the "Negro National Anthem" Lift Every Voice and Sing.
James Weldon Johnson, a school principal, penned this anthem in 1900 with his brother J. Rosamond Johnson. He later sent the song to a New York Publisher and the rest is history.
I came across this rendition at Sojourner’s Place it is too cute. So, in the spirit of multi-culturalism and unity take a listen:
