I HAD to write this post after reading some very disparaging remarks about Tyler Perry on another blog that I will not mention here. This is the comment I left there in it’s entirety.
"We are ALWAYS COMPLAINING. First of all Tyler Perry is a self-made multi-millionaire. The problem isn’t that TYLER PERRY exists. The problem is that there is only one Tyler Perry. When we don’t see other players in the game,WE ALWAYS dump on the guy or girl who’s hot.
I am tired of Black people being able to call other black people HORRIBLE names like "mammy" and "coon" without consequence. These terms are hurtful and damaging even when they come from ‘US’. I read where someone described J-Hud’s performance in Dreamgirls as a "stereotypical mammy" role.The commenter should have been ashamed to even utter those words about a sistah, an Oscar winner at that.
GIVE ME A BREAK!
When we have more producers, actors, studio heads, Oscar Winners that represent the muti-faceted African American experience, maybe then, will I tolerate some Tyler Perry criticism, criticism NOT hate.
Until then, I will reiterate, GIVE ME A BREAK!"
Oh you have SO got to tell me the name of that website. I want to see exactly what they said that sparked this.
I personally enjoy most of Tyler’s work. He could try harder to stay away from some of the frequently used stereotypes in his characters, but for the most part, he puts out some good stuff.
I can’t speak about “Meet the Browns” though. From what I’ve heard from people’s opinions that I trust, it was pretty bad. I’ll have to see for myself.
I prefer his stage plays, but being a fellow writer, I have to show the brother love.
Have you ever seen one? I got a chance to see “Madea Goes to Jail” when it came to KC. The live versions are SO much better than the dvds.
I saw Madea Goes to Jail when it was in Chicago a few years back. They are much funnier live. The actors adlib a lot.

I am on the fence on this one, but I certainly have to agree with your comment about there only being ONE Tyler Perry.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to see any of his films, but I sat through videos of the stages plays. They were entertaining in some ways, but much too flat and full of stereotypes for me to take them seriously. It looks like he’s upped his game with the films, though, so until I’ve seen one I’ll keep an open mind.
No matter what I think of his work based on my limited exposure to it, I had mad respect for what he has accomplished. Just like with Condoleeza Rice, I don’t have to agree with what you represent to admire how you are working what you got…
